She was awarded a scholarship to take classes in The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art after she graduated from Kenyon College. Janney debuted on television during 1999. She performed the role of C. J. Cregg as part of NBC's political drama The West Wing from 1999-2006 which earned her the award for four Primetime Emmy Awards. Her role on her role in the Showtime show Masters of Sex, Margaret Scully, Janney won the Primetime Emmy Award 2014 for Outstanding Guest Actress In the Drama Series.
